Process

A creative director at a new media company once told me that he is more interested in seeing how prospective applicants think what their portfolios look like. He likes to, and wants to, see evidence of how designers think, where their ideas come from and how they evolve. He wants to see that they’re able to come up with many ideas and that they explore all the possibilities of how a project can look, be organized and function.

I feel the same way so for me—and your prospective employers—keep a record of all your creative development as you work. Sketches and other print items are easy to collect, electronic work less so. It’ll take a little getting used to, but from time to time as you’re working on the computer, take a screen shot of what you are working on. Save multiple versions of your files and sites as a project develops. You need to keep a visual documentation of your design inquiry to show its depth. You will turn in this documentation with each project.

I expect new work with each class. Failure to make significant progress since the previous class will reduce your grade on the assignment you are working on. An assignment’s grade could drop as much as a 1/2 letter grade each time you come to class unprepared.

Final Grade

You will not receive a final grade until all your projects are completed and you have turned in your projects on a CD/DVD in a case or sleeve with your name, course title and term marked on the disc. Include all of your projects as electronic files. Your disc will not be returned. The GD program keeps an archive of student work for program assessment and possibly marketing purposes.
